CUMBERLAND — Unbeaten Greely continued its march to an unprecedented sixth straight state volleyball title Wednesday night. The top-seeded Rangers swept the first three games in the best-of-five Western Maine final to beat third-seeded Biddeford for the third time this season. The scores were 25-17, 25-16, 25-18.

Greely will make its seventh consecutive appearance in the state final at 1 p.m. Saturday at Ellsworth High against the Eastern Maine champions, Mount Desert High School.

The Tigers, the only team to win a game against the Rangers in the regular season, played three very competitive games. "They are some of the best players we played against in the league," Greely outside hitter Michaela Campbell said. "It´s always nice to have some competition, and they could bring it." ...

Greely still unbeaten, still unchallenged

CUMBERLAND — It seems the volleyball team at Greely High School never rebuilds. The squad simply picks up where it left off the previous season. The Rangers, aiming for their sixth consecutive state championship, rolled to an impressive win Thursday night against Biddeford to run their record to 7-0. "We have 14 kids who can play," Greely Coach Kelvin Hasch said. "It´s probably the deepest team we´ve had since we started here." It was Greely´s second win of the season over the Tigers (3-4), who played for the Western Maine championship last season.

WINDHAM — The stage was set for someone to rise and for someone to fall. Both the Greely and Mount Desert Island volleyball teams entered the state final Saturday without a loss - Greely at 15-0 and MDI at 16-0. So in the final match of the season, one team had to walk away the ultimate winner.

Amanda Gray, a senior with state champion Greely, is considered one of the top hitters in the state. Coach Kevin Hasch says she "has a jump serve which is pretty hard to receive."

Volleyball Players to Watch

PAUL BETIT, Staff Writer

Amanda Gray, Greely, senior: A middle hitter, Gray is one of the state´s top servers. "She´s got a jump serve which is pretty hard to receive," Greely Coach Kelvin Hasch said. "She´s just a good all-around player."

Lauren Kinney, Greely, junior: An outside hitter, Kinney is a solid all-around player. "She´s a take-charge person on the court," Hasch said. "She wants the ball. She wants to hit the ball."

Amy Young, Greely, senior: A middle hitter, Young is expected to carry more of the scoring load this season. "She has a good read on opposing players, so she is very good at blocking," Hasch said.

Northern sports preview: GREELY RANGERS

2004 Results: 17-0 (Defeated MDI 3-0 in state championship match)

TOP PLAYERS: Amanda Gray (senior), Amy Young (senior), Tessa Churchill (junior), Lauren Kinney (junior)

PIVOTAL MATCHES: Sept. 2 (H) BIDDEFORD, Sept. 13 (H) GORHAM, Sept. 20 @ Yarmouth, Sept. 22 @ Biddeford, Sept. 24 @ Gorham, Oct. 6 @ Gorham, Oct. 12 (H) YARMOUTH

COACH’S COMMENT: “We have a lot of newer players this year. The kids have to play together. I expect to be back in the tournament. Everyone will be gunning for us. We want some competition.” THE

FORECASTER’S FORECAST: In a very, very short time, the Greely Rangers have become the volleyball program that all the rest seek to emulate. In their three varsity seasons, the Rangers have reached the state final, and the past two years Greely hasn’t lost a match, regular or postseason. That streak might be in jeopardy this fall, but the Rangers still figure to be the favorites to win it all. Churchill, Gray, Kinney and Young have enjoyed some amazing success in their short time. This year, they’re joined by juniors Kristen Biskup and Allison Scott, athletes who are no strangers to success indoors on a court. The quality of play in southern Maine gets better all the time, but Greely is still the leader of the pack. If the Rangers stay healthy and don’t focus too much on their winning streak, they’ll be the western representative in the first championship match played in the southern part of the state. Don’t be surprised if they win it too.

FUN FACT: Entering the 2005 season, Greely has won 33 consecutive matches, dating back to their loss to Woodland in the 2002 state championship match. Woodland holds the state record of 59 straight match victories.
